Wearables

Armor, resistances and what each piece costs you

Rust wearable armor covers 117 clothing and armor pieces, 98 with damage protection values and 16 with cold or heat penalties.

How the armor zones are grouped

Each piece lists the hit areas it covers: head, chest, stomach, arms, hands, legs and feet. The table groups them into head, body and arms, and legs and feet, so a pair of gloves sits with body armor. A suit that covers all three is listed as full body, and one that leaves the head bare as body and legs.

Every wearable, by what it stops

98 wearable items, sorted by bullet protection. Bullet, slash, blunt, stab and arrow are what the piece stops when another player hits the part it covers. Explosion, bite, radiation, cold and heat are what it adds to the whole outfit: the game adds up every piece you wear and keeps a sixth of the total, all of it for radiation, and cold counts as insulation. A blank cell is a zero, and a negative figure makes that damage worse.

What armor costs you

Two costs never show up in a protection table: wearing the Heavy Plate Jacket blocks aiming down sights, and wearing the Bunny Costume, Chicken Costume or Horse Costume stops you mounting a horse or a vehicle.

The pieces that take an armor insert

An armor insert fits into 16 wearables, and it is an item of its own: the Asbestos Armor Insert, Lead Armor Insert, Metal Armor Insert and Wooden Armor Insert .

The pieces with no armor value

All 16 cosmetic Rust wearables carry zero armor protection, so none of them appears in the main resistance comparison table.

The Metal Shield, Reinforced Wooden Shield and Wooden Shield have no armor value either, and still protect: a shield is held alongside a one-handed weapon or tool to keep arrows and bullets at bay.

How Rust armor protection and hit zones work

The Rust Wearables matrix benchmarks all 117 player-equippable garments and shields: 98 protective armor and clothing pieces, 16 zero-stat cosmetic items, and 3 held shields. Server combat math separates localized strikes from whole-body hazards: projectile, melee, and arrow hits sum every garment covering that body region, whereas blast, animal bite, and heat exposure divide the suit total by 6. Radiation bypasses that whole-body divisor and keeps its full outfit sum, while Cold acts as clamped thermal insulation and 16 items carry negative ratings that worsen thermal damage.

Grouping equipment across 5 body coverage filters separates head gear, torso and arm layers, leg and boot pieces, two-zone overalls, and full-body suits covering all three regions simultaneously. Standalone radiation defense peaks on the Hazmat Suit at 50%, while 16 garments include between one and three plate slots accepting Asbestos, Lead, Metal, or Wooden armor inserts. Heavy plate layers impose severe mobility trade-offs by restricting sight alignment or vehicle mounting, whereas off-hand shields block incoming projectiles when raised alongside a one-handed weapon.

Frequently asked questions

How many wearable items and armor pieces are in Rust?

Vanilla Rust includes 117 wearable items (116 from the 133-item Attire tab plus the equippable Pumpkin): 98 provide damage resistance, 16 are purely visual outfits, and 3 are off-hand shields. Protective entries span Head (35), Body and arms (24), Legs and feet (17), Body and legs (5) and Full body (17).

Which Rust helmet and armor pieces have the highest bullet protection?

Highest single-slot bullet resistance per body region comes from the Heavy Plate Helmet (90% bullet protection), the Heavy Plate Jacket (75% bullet protection), the Heavy Plate Pants (75% bullet protection). Because directional hits add every layer covering the struck bone, survivors combine a helmet, chestplate, hoodie, pants, kilt, boots, and gloves.

How does Rust calculate bullet armor versus explosion, bite, and radiation protection?

Directional weapon impacts (Bullet, Slash, Blunt, Stab, and Arrow) total the percentages of all items covering the struck bone. Area channels (Explosion, Bite, and Heat) divide the combined outfit rating by 6, while Radiation keeps 100% of the summed outfit value.

Which Rust armor pieces accept armor inserts and what inserts exist?

In total, 16 wearable garments provide one to three mod slots that accept 4 craftable plate types (Asbestos, Lead, Metal, and Wooden plates). Slotting up to three plates boosts projectile and melee mitigation, adds radiation shielding, or curbs heat buildup.

Which Rust armor pieces block aiming down sights or riding horses and vehicles?

Equipping the Heavy Plate Jacket (1 item) prevents aiming down sights with firearms. Wearing the Bunny Costume, the Chicken Costume and the Horse Costume (3 items) blocks mounting horses or vehicle seats, whereas Tactical Gloves remove weapon sway.

How do shields work in the Rust wearable comparison?

Survivors can craft and hold 3 defensive shields in their off-hand slot (Metal Shield or Reinforced Wooden Shield or Wooden Shield). Unlike clothing pieces that add permanent percentage columns, a shield must be actively held up beside a compatible sidearm or tool to intercept frontal fire.

Which Rust suit or clothing gives the best radiation protection for monuments?

For single-slot hazmat gear, the Hazmat Suit delivers 50% radiation resistance across Head, Body, and Legs at once. Because radiation ignores the 1/6 area divisor, stacking a Hoodie, Pants, Poncho, Boots, and Gloves also reaches high radtown thresholds.

Why do some Rust wearables have negative Cold or Heat protection values?

Among the 98 protective wearables, 16 items carry a sub-zero rating in at least one thermal column, such as Heavy Plate Helmet, Heavy Plate Jacket and Heavy Plate Pants. Negative numbers increase environmental damage taken: metal plate gear worsens freezing and desert heat, while wetsuits penalize desert travel.
