Rust ore nodes

Rust spawns 4 mineable ore nodes (Sulfur, Metal, Stone, and HQM), each at 500 health with a finishing bonus.

What each Rust ore node yields

What it takes to break one

Every node has 500 health. How fast a tool empties one depends on its damage and on how much of the node it destroys as it hits. These are the 8 ways to break one, sorted by how much they bring home. Swings, time and tool life change from one node to the next, so each node has its own table.

What you carry away

Every swing also destroys part of the node, and what is destroyed never reaches your inventory: a rock loses about half of every node it hits. The tool also decides the finish bonus. Three of these tools collect it whole, one collects part of it, and the other four get none. The salvaged hammer breaks a node faster than the stone pickaxe, but it destroys more of the rock and sits exactly on the cut-off, so it carries less away and loses the bonus.

How ore nodes work in Rust

Mineable mineral nodes in Rust consist of 4 rock prefabs appearing across cliffs, hillsides, and arid or arctic formations with 500 hitpoints apiece. Breaking these boulders supplies the raw Stones, Metal Ore, Sulfur Ore, and High Quality Metal Ore required to upgrade base foundations, smelt metal fragments and high quality metal in furnaces, and manufacture gunpowder and raiding explosives at a workbench throughout the wipe.

Ore nodes yields, spawn mechanics and reference breakdown

Every ore sheet models strike-by-strike tool progression from first swing to rock shatter, accounting for per-hit rounding, glowing weak-spot speed boosts, and the final finishing bonus. Survivors can compare total mining time and mineral recovery across electric, metal, stone, and primitive tools while factoring in Basic, Advanced, and Pure Ore Tea plus Bear Pie buffs before heading out on a farming run across snow, desert, or temperate ridges.

  • Mineral boulder types (4 nodes): Covers Stone, Metal, Sulfur, and cold-region High Quality Metal targets, each spawning with 500 world hitpoints.
  • Finishing bonus retention: Each boulder reserves a large share of its total mineral capacity for the final shattering strike when mined with a proper tool.
  • Tool tier recovery: Industrial and metal mining tools recover 100% of the mineral pool, whereas stone picks and rocks forfeit part of the yield.
  • Tea and pie multipliers: Three tiers of Ore Tea stack with Bear Pie buffs to boost mineral output per node by up to 65%.
  • Weak-spot cadence and refills: Striking the sparkling glint speeds up swing intervals, and pneumatic drills refill durability for free at any workbench.

The other groups: Animals, NPCs, Loot containers, Trees, Collectibles, Vehicles and Monument machines.

Frequently asked questions

How much health and yield do Rust ore nodes have?

All 4 mineable ore nodes in Rust (Sulfur, Metal, Stone, and High Quality Metal) carry a 500-HP durability pool on server maps and reserve part of their mineral payout for the final strike.

Which tools mine full yield from Rust ore nodes?

Top-tier mining tools (the Jackhammer, Pickaxe, and Icepick) harvest 100% of an ore node's mineral capacity including the full finishing bonus, whereas primitive tools like the Stone Pickaxe, Salvaged Hammer, and Rock lose a fraction.

How much Sulfur, Metal, Stone, and HQM does each Rust ore node hold?

Breaking a full 500 HP ore node with a Jackhammer, Pickaxe, or Icepick yields 1,000 Stones from a Stone node, 600 Metal Ore plus 2 High Quality Metal Ore from a Metal node, and 300 Sulfur Ore from a Sulfur node.

How does hitting the sparkling weak spot affect ore mining in Rust?

Striking the glowing hotspot on any of the 4 ore nodes accelerates the swing animation and cuts the hits required to break the 500 HP rock without altering the total mineral quantity inside.

How much extra ore do Basic, Advanced, and Pure Ore Teas give in Rust?

Consuming an Ore Tea multiplies every strike and the finishing bonus across all 4 ore node types: Basic Ore Tea adds +20%, Advanced Ore Tea adds +35%, and Pure Ore Tea adds +50% mineral output.

Does eating a Bear Pie increase Ore Tea yields when mining in Rust?

Eating a Bear Pie while an Ore Tea is active multiplies the tea's percentage buff on Stone, Metal, and Sulfur nodes, boosting a Pure Ore Tea (Creamy Pure Ore Tea) from +50% up to +65% total yield.

Where can you refill a Jackhammer in Rust when mining ore nodes?

Survivors refill a Jackhammer for free at any Workbench Level 1, Level 2, or Level 3 (including public monument benches at Outpost and Bandit Camp), restoring full condition with minimal maximum durability wear.
