One Diesel Fuel runs the engine for 120s, so 30 of them keep it digging for an hour.

How a giant excavator works

  • The engine takes one Diesel Fuel the moment it starts, then one for every 120s it runs, whether or not a button is pressed. The arm only digs while the engine runs.
  • What it digs is split evenly between its two output piles, and anything that does not fit falls on the ground next to them.
  • Switch buttons mid-run and the few units still owed from the old resource come out as the new one.
  • The supply computer charges while the engine runs. After 10 min of running, 5 diesel, it can call a cargo plane, which drops supplies at one of 4 points around the pit, and there is no limit to how many.
  • A radio broadcaster at the pit sends on 4777 for exactly as long as the engine runs, so a pager tuned to it tells you when someone starts the excavator.

How the monument Giant Excavator works in Rust

On procedural Rust server maps, Giant Excavator appears as 1 permanent world fixture distributed across 1 monument compound. Unlike player-built workshop furniture placed inside a private base, these public monument installations remain bolted to the map terrain across the entire wipe and can be operated by any visiting survivor without Tool Cupboard authorization.

Giant Excavator monument locations, grid stages and efficiency

Monument placement tables, fuel or material conversion rates, and base-deployable comparisons above document where Giant Excavator stands on every procedural map seed and how its public utility mechanics compare against player-crafted stations.

  • Map placement density (1 fixture): Bolted into 1 land or coastal radtown layout on every procedural seed.
  • Structural hitpoints and pickup rules: Invulnerable world fixture; immune to rockets, C4, melee tools, and siege weapons, and cannot be picked up with a Hammer.
  • Electrical grid and fuel requirements: Self-contained monument utility that operates immediately without slotting Heavy Fuses at Power Plant.
  • Base crafting and deployable comparison: Exclusive to procedural monument compounds with no craftable base equivalent in vanilla survival.
  • Public access and PvP considerations: Open to all players without building privilege, making surrounding sightlines, safe-zone turrets, and cycle timers critical during loot runs.

Frequently asked questions

How many Giant Excavator units spawn at Rust monuments?

Vanilla Rust monument layouts mount 1 permanent station of this type across 1 mainland or coastal monument, giving solo survivors and groups reliable public station access across every procedural map seed and server wipe.

How much health does Giant Excavator have at a Rust monument?

The monument fixture of Giant Excavator is indestructible in Rust, so visiting players cannot damage, pick up, or destroy the public station with explosives, melee tools, or siege weapons during a wipe.

How does Giant Excavator operate at a Rust monument?

Survivors feed Diesel Fuel barrels into the Giant Excavator engine room and press one of four resource buttons on the control console, running 2 minutes per barrel while transmitting a 4777 Hz RF alert across the server.

Does Giant Excavator depend on the Power Plant electrical grid in Rust?

Giant Excavator runs independently of the Power Plant Heavy Fuse boxes, allowing survivors to use the public station immediately at any of its 1 monument location without powering the grid.

Which Rust monuments have Giant Excavator built into their layout?

Monument compounds housing this station include Giant Excavator Pit (1 total unit across 1 site), giving solo survivors and groups permanent public access at those fixed coordinates throughout every procedural server wipe.

Can players craft and place their own version of Giant Excavator inside a base?

Giant Excavator has no craftable base counterpart in vanilla Rust; it exists solely as a world installation bolted into monument terrain across its 1 monument placement, giving visitors free public access.

How does Giant Excavator compare to the other 16 monument machines in Rust?

Giant Excavator is 1 of 17 interactive monument station types indexed in the RustPotato Environment directory, alongside yellow, green, and red recyclers, Level 1 and 2 workbenches, diesel quarries, pumpjacks, the Giant Excavator, and public utility benches.
